I also see the same thing. I installed 11.04 from the downloaded iso
file on my Lenovo x60 and screen rotation with xrandr worked perfectly
in combination with unity. Only when I did an apt-get upgrade, I started
getting the black window on top of the screen in portrait mode. I now
have unity

I just installed a fresh copy of 11.04, because I had too much annoyances after
upgrade from 10.10. One of them was that after some time, right-click menu in
firefox will dissapear after mouse-over, like this:
1. right-click anywhere in firefox (not just hyperlink)
2. move mouse in any direction

No problem. If apt-get works then it is a problem with the update-manager
after all. I would like to help you in completely removing update-manager and
reinstalling it fresh to see if that solves the problem. Would you like to try
it?
