I managed to fix this issue. It seems to be a problem with the ATI fglrx
driver.
I switched to the open source ATI driver, and now Gnome 3 looks fine. I had to
follow this guide to get rid of the proprietary driver though:

When unity tries to load, it shows only a small nautilus menu which only
allows me to navigate the file system. There is no launcher and the top

Switching workspaces when using the cube and ctrl+alt+arrow produces a
momentary flash of the previous workspace
you just switched from.
Also when using ctrl+alt+shift+arrow to rotate with window, after the flash
