I had experienced something similar in 11.04 when attempting to install
grub on a RAID 1 /boot partition. My resolution was to partition like
this:

The hit the enter key sounds to me like one of the scripts in
/etc/rcS.d is waiting for input when it shouldn't. Opening a task on
those packages for tracking.
