solid (and blinking). When a terminal is not focused, its cursor is an
outline (and doesn't blink).
Sometimes (but increasingly more often in Oneiric than with older
versions) I get the outline cursor

For example, I hit Super, type ged, press Enter and it opens the
first result of the file search instead of gedit (which gets opened if I

That would explain everything. In Linux (not just Ubuntu), external hard
drives are treated just like internal ones, and the Ubuntu installer
might have been confused by that. However, they are treated differently
at boot time (the exact treatment they get depends also from the
computer's BIOS);
