I think the problem is with Unity, not X, since some parts of desktop works and
I can switch to text terminals (alt + f1).

This happens for me as well on a VMware VM, I thought that maybe LVM was
the cause as my first install was using VMware Easy Install and that
most likely didn't use LVM, but I tried a non LVM configuration and it
also broke.
The fix available here does fix the issue though for me, once it's

I currently have gnome-shell 3.3.90-0ubuntu1installed from the update
recently, and am now unable to render gnome-shell as described in post
1. I am unable to determine if this is the package which causes gnome-
shell to fail to load, however the symptoms are as described, and have
appeared for me

It actually is fixed - I tested it a couple days ago, and now the window
decorations are not distorted independent of the $QT_GRAPHICSSYSTEM
environment variable (either native or raster works).
