It also happened to me when using an HP Cloud / EC2 image: the VM is in English
and when trying to change language to Spanish, I'm reproducing this bug.

I removed my comment, because I found out that there was a mistake in my
Kerberos config. I couldn't figure it out because the ping
doesn't work in my case because the companies firewall doesn't allow
it. Its better to use something like traceroute in this case. But

In my case, the touchpad (and keyboard) stop working but I can plug in

Example of setting system defaults for Gnome Terminal to increase the
number of scrollback lines (Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx):
gconftool-2 --direct --config-source
xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults \
--apply-schema /usr/share/gconf/schemas/gno
Last time I tried it the error message did not repeat and everything
worked correctly.
Possibly this was after some recent patches to the system.

Thank you for taking the time to report this crash and helping to make
this software better. This particular crash has already been reported
and is a duplicate of bug #1027043, so is being marked as such.
I think this may have been fixed in Quantal, when update-manager's
windows were redone a bit. Since version 0.165, at least, I haven't
seen this problem again.

It looks like you experienced two different bugs.
Doug's report of the update-manager window not appearing, fits bug
989588. Like you say, there isn't a crash, the window just doesn't
show.

In my case - uninstalling all proprietary NVidia drivers solved the problem
(Dell XPS M1530) but have to put up with rather crappy graphic; SMPlayer
doesn't work and launcher & icons pretty big (it can be fixed though) - but at
least system shuts down no problem and it was the aim.
