Actually this is only an issue in the intial screen of "select your
location" where it implies this "will be used to set your time zone".
However a few screens later you do get to select your time zone
independent of the location selection.
Perhaps the wording of the initial screen should be more

Have 2 systems showing same issue after 12.04 to 12.10 upgrade (x64);
Dell Studio 1535 with AMD/ATI Radeon 3400 DV620 Video Card
Asus U24E with Integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000
Both seem to be running vesa driver, and showing user experience as standard.

got this bug when i tried to install Ubuntu 12.10 over my 12.04 LTS stable
install last night on my HP AMD 64bit laptop
Had a blank desktop, as you describe. managed to fix it by doing this;
sudo apt-get remove fglrx
sudo reboot
Now its all back to normal again (although i may not have optimal g

this looks better. I tried one game so far and it worked ok for the first 5min.
No failures seen so far.

Update: Just a moment ago a new update for fglrx went live. Installed
and the same problem. No Unity desktop. I have to uninstall it manually
to get the desktop back. (sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*)
