distro, when both major desktop environments (Unity and KDE) use or rely
on it, and it affects nearly-ubiquitous commodity video hardware.

Thank you Justin, I had figured as much, as this is happening in
Windows. However, it seems randomly I am able to connect at 1GBps. So
the card CAN do GIgabit speeds.

this problem could be reproduced although on a physical machine with
12.04.1 LTS and Kernel 3.2.0
At the attached screenshot you ca seen the kernel panic message when stopping
the open-iscsi deamon.
