thanks removing all nvidia related packages that had no other
dependencies attached helped. So also in my case the Virtual Box package
update seemed to have caused the damage. Though I didn't need to remove
the Virtual Box package.

repo, but I switched back to regular Quantual repos and it kept

@Srdjan, I can't blame you, this thread has been pretty focused on
nvidia-drivers.
I haven't investigated /etc/modprobe.d/ yet, but I suspect that only
nvidia and fglrx exhibit this, because they exclude the opensource-
drivers upon installation.
