All 5 boots produced a usable X session. I haven't had a problem booting up
successfully since the 1st. By cold boot I just mean a normal power on
after a normal power off. In actual fact I haven't had to do a hard reset
(or manually hold down the power button to power off and then power on
again),

Annotation: This occured during a previous suspend and prevented it from
resuming properly.
While GNOME Shell by default doesn't have desktop icons, GNOME 3.8
includes a new GNOME Classic mode which does show desktop icons by
default using Nautilus. What was removed this cycle is Nautilus handling
the desktop wallpaper which is not the same as handling icons on the
desktop.

Just ran a dist-upgrade and noticed that the post-install script for
colord fails:

On 12.10 with up-to-date (as of 3/03/13) packages, my external
microphone still does not work on the UX31E. The internal microphone is
disabled when I plug in my headset, but I get no from the mic.
