I just found out that the there is a mixer called "Auto-Mute Mode". If
that is set to disabled, Speaker control works, even if a plug is
inserted in the headphone jack. If "Auto-Mute Mode" is enabled, and a
plug is inserted, it mutes the speaker by other means than by muting the
Speaker channel in

I have an N56VZ laptop. I run Arch-linux and have the same problem.
Booting into Windows 7 or Windows 8 does make the fan quiet, but it does
