Regarding the lack of HDMI audio, it is disabled by default for ATI
Radeon. According to the developer Alex Deucher, "The current HDMI code

On a relatively fresh Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop, "sudo apt-get install
ia32-libs" alone pulls 242 packages worth of 244MB installed space. A
monster indeed.
While boinc without recommends shows a much nicer picture: 6 packages
worth less than 18M

That one monitor loses sync is a kernel modesetting bug. Note that
apport failed to upload the dmesg so I can't check for any likely causes
of the freezes. However, if you can grab a drm.debug=6 dmesg for the
both classes of failures, I may be able to resolve them.

Wife has a U300s running Debian Mint. Got bit recently w/ custom 3.5.2
(standard .config updated with defaults and compiled). I'm compiling
3.8.4 on it now (again debian mint standard .config updated w/ defaults
for 3.8.4) to see if that fixes it. Filesystem is ext4. I know I'm on
ubuntu launchpad
If I could get this to work at all, I wouldn't of course be surprised at
the reported bug. Presumably the demime option simply scans the
filename itself, without decoding it.
Can you verify whether this is the case on raring (or at least quantal
or precise) as well?

I have created a patch on the upstream bug but I'm having difficulty
reproducing the issue on my machine. Is someone able to help me with
testing? I can either create the deb packages for you or create a patch
that you can use to build your own. I currently have debs built for
12.10 but can create
