Using the latest 13.10 (kernel 3.11.0-12-generic) we performed a backup
which is essentially an rsync from a 6 disk array to a USB HDD - both
are BTRFS filesystems
After several hours the machine was unresponsive and the screen full of
out of memory errors and killing lots

Sorry, I didn`t know how to find out exactly package for this issue. I
thought that every application has it`s own .desktop file where mimetype
placed, so chose Evince.
No worry! The do, the issue is that if several applications claim a
mimetype you need to be able to pick a preferred one ...

I'm running plain X today and HTML5 video is playing fine. So, I
conclude that the likely explanation is some part of the Intel driver
that's being activated by XMir but not by plain X.

The ubuntu-system-settings and indicator-bluetooth branches I've linked
here attempt to handle things more gracefully whenever indicator-
bluetooth can't work with /dev/rfkill -- it attempts to fall back to
just calling org.bluez.Adapter::SetProperties(Powered, on/off)
This is an improvement;
The kernel you proposed to install, I installed. It produces pretty much the
same behaviour. So I guess it is not solved upstream.
I cannot change the status to kernel-bug-exists-upstream, it is not part of
the options. So I changed it to confirmed.
Hopefully you can change the status properly.

After one or two successful suspend-to-ram cycles the system wakes up
and immediately goes back to sleep. After this double suspend, some
systems like rfkill, for example, will only work after a reboot.
Steps in which I can consistently reproduce the bug:

- booting with card and USB-disk (USB-powered) inserted, is always working
- plugging in card first and after that a device, is not working
- plugging card with USB stick, work, but takes a long time
