I noticed a warning on the top taskbar and ended up running 'apt-get check'
qhxixh gave numerous dependencies errors and further suggested/led me to

I hit this as well, while upgrading from kubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. Here's
as much debugging as I'm knowledgable to do, captured before I cross my
fingers and reboot anyway...

2. wait about 1 minute
3. whoopsie-preferences starts respawning whoopsie in an infinite loop
(If nothing happens after about a minute, try changes some preferences
and waiting again)

I have no any idea how to reproduce it. Several latest releases i got
random errors (at least they look random to me) after sleep, reboot and
hibernate so I should just turn off apport to get rid of them.

so the first steps in fixing this are as follows:
1. in /etc/libvirt/qemu.conf add the lines
vnc_allow_host_audio = 1
user=bmullan
group=bmullan
2. in /etc/init/libvirt-bin.conf, add the line
export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=pa
right before the final exec, so 'script' block at the bottom

I was able to recover the machine by making a USB boot media from the
kubuntu 13.10 install disk, booting from that, and then performing the
efibootmgr command noted above while running from the newer kernel

Cory: By looking at the code in auth.c, it appears that the user
supplied authgroup is now validated against the list returned from the
server as part of the xmlpost code. Adding --no-xmlpost corrects the
problem because there's no list to validate against.
