the front and back mic inputs, and things work as expected (I can select

As far as I can tell, this is fixed in 14.04.
However, as networking in 14.04 using my e1000e base adaptor appears to
be broken, my testing was restricted (appeared to receive packets but
not send anything). I couldn't install the ir-keytable package required
for testing.
I ended up booting 14.04

As I was burning a DVD in k3b, X suddenly crashed and I heard this
constant clicking sound on my computer. I was thrown to a command line
prompt indicating "(initramfs)" (without the quotes.) I tried to quit
from initramfs and my computer rebooted. When it rebooted, the cli

* nvidia-319 is a "transitional" package that redirects to nvidia-331
* nvidia-331 DOES NOT support GeForce 210
* nvidia-173 (next step down) also DOES NOT support GeForce 210
Therefore, there is not a binary driver installable with apt-get that
supports the GeForce 210. nV
I somehow missed nvidia-304.
HOWEVER, Ubuntu will try to install nvidia-331 for this card, which will
not work.

Following the workaround for emacs24, I edited:
sudo vi /usr/share/applications/emacs24.desktop
and changed the line:
Exec=/usr/bin/emacs24 %F
by:
Exec=bash -c "unset XMODIFIERS;/usr/bin/emacs24 %F"

I just installed the latest libreoffice 4.2 from the ppa you mentioned and I
