I have a W540 that also freezes when trying to use DP, with the
difference that I don't see any oops or error message in neither the
kernel logs, nor the X logs. When I plug in an external monitor, xranrd
shows it as connected to DP2, regardless of whether it's connected to
DP1, DP2, DVI or HDMI. O

Jani, for the record, I did my tests with your two patches before I
updated the dock firmware, and it definitely did make the hangs go away
--- and as I mentioned, I was even able to connect to an external Dell

Jens, OEMs in general do not provide a full, and transparent detail of what a
BIOS update would help address. So, if your IT department gave you some limp
noodle reason to deny you an update, it is just silly. With regards to the BIOS
update for your model, it notes verbatim:
