removed light-locker light-locker-settings packages and installed gnome-
screensaver package. gnome-screensaver locker looks much nicer than
xscreensaver IMHO.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. I now see that hv_set_ifconfig is
shipped in linux-cloud-tools-common, so reassinging to its source
package "linux".

Confirmed on Xubuntu 14.04 with Kernel 3.13.0-24-generic, install done
via minimal CD and Xubuntu Desktop installed afterwards.
The "allow-hotplug" change suggested by Carloslp FIXED the problem.
I installed the OS via ethernet and wanted to use wifi afterwards (That
might be relevant).

In the hope that this helps someone. I spent most of today fighting
this and found a solution.
d-i preseed/early_command string grep -q options /etc/resolv.conf ||
echo "options single-request" >> /etc/resolv.conf ;
and then
d-i preseed/late_command string grep -q options
/etc/resolvconf/r
oops, that late_command doesn't work, but you get the picture. It's
missing in-target, but I'm not sure if I can in-target redirect.
