figured out I needed more the the compiz-plugins-* packages. No idea why
that package went awol overnight but all working now.

sorry for the long delay. A recent update caused a problems on my
Kubuntu installation. I wasn't careful enough in my attempts to repair
and ended up with a broken system.
On the positive side, this means that I can now check if the bug exists in a
fresh installation of Kubuntu 14.04

Something came up.
I did fix it as described above,- but:
I use wireless network to my Ubuntu,- and bridged network setup in the
virtualbox options for the VM hosts.
When I ping something from the terminal, now I get duplicate answers?
