OK, it turns out there is an incompatibility between the postfix package
in precise and the version of openssl in precise.
This was fixed in postfix 2.10.2 by the following change:

This is bad as ever on 14.04. The current kernel updates have a 1
line changelog, and update-manager freezes around 20 seconds (on a quad-
core, 8 GB RAM desktop) before it refreshes the GUI when I click on
these packages.

I experienced this problem when updating a client from Ubuntu 12.04 to
14.04. Our file server is running SunOS 5.11 but the symptom is the
same. For us, It's not a source code problem but the way
modules/parse_sun.c is compiled.
Here's the gcc line for parse_sun from a default debuild of the
