14.04 desktop on a Dell Latitude 3440 which has an Intel Haswell

FWIW, this does not seem to be universal to UEFI systems. I've
performed enlistment and commissioning on several IBM systems in full
UEFI mode that behaved just fine (and a couple new density systems that
showed the same sort of issue Narninder mentions here).

That is correct Jeff, it depends how individual OEM implemented the UEFI.
If the location of UEFI is same as legacy SMBIOS then no issue but if it
differs then it will break which is happening on latest implementation on

I was getting the same error message while installing skype on Xubuntu
14.04 amd64. sni-qt:i386 wouldn't install as a result. Jean-Pierre's

Exactly the same issue here.
I've used Ubuntu for years with multiple multi-display setups (one at
work, one or two at home). This did not used to be a problem. The first
occurrences seemed to coincide with the time I bought a new monitor (and
new model) that is 2560x1440. At the same time, I
Workaround found: Initiating a screenlock (ctrl-alt-L) and unlocking
reliably restores panel and indicator bar responsiveness.
