Just bought a Toshiba Portege z30 which has a Validity Sensors
fingerprint reader with id [138a:0010]. I applied the vfs5011 patch and

3.8 on a really old laptop. It has an AMD Mobile Athlon 64 with ATi
Mobility Radeon 9600 Turbo graphics and 512MB of RAM on a 60GB
mechanical hard drive (I don't remember the RPM speed). Hope that helps.

Had the same problem in Lubuntu 14.04.1. At least in my case behavior
depends on the terminal. Hence, it might be a bug related to the
specific terminal. Anyway, it worked with xterm, and lxterminal. It does
not work with lilyterm 0.9.9.4-0~1. I haven't tried others.

Removing video=uvesafb from /etc/default/grub does allow me to boot
