I've near searched to the end of Google to find a solution. One of my
observations is that the symptoms of other bugs never matches the
symptoms of this bug. On my laptop, everything seems to be OK—that is,
until I run some thing requiring 3D. Then my machine grinds to a halt.

For what it's worth I believe the issue comes when the old items are
removed and then the new ones are attempted to be installed. If I didn't

Update.
After purging 'fglrx' login was successful:
sudo apt-get purge fglrx
I tried to reinstall 'fglrx'
sudo apt-get install fglrx
but after that the problem reappeared so I had to delete 'fglrx' again.

Wow, I had this happened to me 4 times *yesterday*. I'm not sure if I am
just extremely unlucky of late or if something is aggravating the
situation. Is there something we can do in software to detect the
problem described in comment #10 and handle it? Presumably android is
working despite this pro

Hi,
On the machine with Ubuntu 14.04 x86_64, I came back on
3.13.0-45-generic kernel and reinstalled my nvidia drivers, then I
tried qv4l2 and it worked. I don't understand. I just tried on a second
machine where I installed Ubuntu 14.04 and ... It works.
