If disabling the X11 synch fixes the problem, it probably falls under
bug #1424013 (which is really about broken support for this feature on
older integrated nVidia GPUs in the driver).

For me it didn't work with the Ubuntu Software center as this surpresses some
feedback from the Installer.
So it worked for me from the command line with simply:
sudo apt-get install ttf-mscorefonts-installer
Then You need to conform the ms-ugly EULA, but you will have Arial etc
after that

I find that simply choosing to log out results in a nearly blank screen
and it's not possible to call a TTY, so a hard reset is needed to reboot
and start over.

have to set back the Volume Control - Output Devices - Built-in Port to

I've now re-read the test case. The correct way is to create the LVM
before the install. I've never done it that way and would like to know
if it is a recent bug, or just a case of asking the installer to do
something it cannot do which as a tester - I'd never dream of!
