Meanwhile, just comment out the "[Element Master]" section in
/usr/share/pulseaudio/alsa-mixer/paths/analog-output.conf should solve
the problem for this card (but might cause problems for other cards).

So I also tried the Ubuntu images and the screen displays different text
but still refuses to boot to the live DE or install on that specific
hardware. I did try using both the acpi=off and i915 modeset=0 boot
parameters to no avail.

- My above post seems to work intermittently. Sometimes it doesn't.
Another workaround for flash is to try using the x64-flash plugin
instead. This seems to have taken care of the problem with flash for
me. As for Silverlight, I tried installing Devil's Pie 2:

It doesn't seem like this was fixed, or maybe it has regressed, but I'm
having the same issue with 14.10, when a security update takes the
kernel from 3.16.0-23.24 to 3.16.0-31.43.

When ever apt-xpain-index runs my CPU is consumed and my fans start
running. It makes doing other things hard. I have seen suggestions like
remove it or move the cron job to monthly instead of weekly. I think
there should be a better solution to this.
