To add one data point to Anders Feder above, installing nvidia-current
(currently 304.125-0ubuntu2) instead of nvidia-346 (currently
346.59-0ubuntu1) doesn't solve the issue for me. Ubuntu fails to start

You should not need the grub-gfxboot 0.97-11 package; as we normally use
grub2 instead; if you want to install grub-efi-ia32, removing grub-
gfxboot should allow you to do that.

device is all you need.

For the record, I've a MacBook Pro 8,1 using broadcom 4331 chip. I find
the bcmwl 6.30 driver consistently unreliable, packets just stop sending
randomly and only solution is module unload reload. I've had much more
success (not perfect tho, but 99% reliable) with the older 6.20 driver.
