I am clearly no expert here, but it seems to me that this drive
discovery was triggered by the RAID configuration On the hard drives. I
had read that I had to disable RAID before installing, I thought I did
that but it didn't actually work until I reverted back to Bios and then
turned off RAID.

The open Source drivers don't work perfectly for everything.
For desktop use, I would certainly recommend the Open Source drivers
over the proprietary ones. They actually run WebGL and JavaScript
canvas functions faster.
However, for gaming, the Open Source drivers currently lack full OpenGL
4.
The status of this request is unclear. Does IBM still care about this
functionality? Does IBM have patches against upstream that we should
apply against the Ubuntu version, or a pointer to patches that have
landed in an upstream release?
