Note: This only happens when I'm using gdm and gnome shell. I have
successfully installed lightdm + unity and it works fine.
So this is a gnome-related bug.

One can workaround this, by using the "shrink to printable area" print
feature in acroread, but only if the measures do not need to be stay the
same (i.e. this is no option if you want to print models and the like).
