I have a similar issue. When I login to Ubuntu LTS 16.04, the screen
shifts chunks of graphics around, I can't do anything, then, a few
seconds later everything works normally, as it should.
And, I installed Ubuntu LTS 16.04 without upgrading from a previous OS.

Yakkety, I use Mesa 12 and nouveau.
Sometimes chrashes immediately after launched, sometimes after some second. The
mouse in unity 7 can be moved, but nothing is active. In unity 8 also the mouse
is freezed

I am running a long time test now (since approximately 24 hours). There
are fresh security updates (for example of python), that appeared after
October 26 when the daily iso file was saved. It is promising; I think
the bug-fix works, but I will let it run for a second night before I
finish this
