Same problem here in Xubuntu 16.04 but using the version 4,8,0 from the
ppa mentioned above:-

sl-modem has not compiled since before Xenial, nor has it had any
upstream maintenance since May 2015 (according to the changelog). I
contend that the amount of effort required to make this package even
compile, much less function correctly, is not worth the utility it
provide

All suggested solutions didn't work well for me. But I found another very
