A baseline test I did was to update both a VM with a fresh install of
Ubuntu 16.04 and my laptop where I upgraded from 14.04 to 16.04. With
both systems up to date (March 25th, 2017) I tried to install the the
latest Nvidia 375 drivers. It installed on the VM (though it is kind of
worthless here)

Below is a section of the dpkg.log. I noticed that the installation is
talking about using linux-image-4.4.0-66-generic:amd64 4.4.0-66.87 and
linux-image-generic:amd64 4.4.0.66.70. But they aren't the
4.8.0-41-generic kernel that came with Ubuntu. Is this conflict
preventing the installation?

This is not a duplicate. I just installed xserver-xorg-legacy. It did
absolutely nothing. Still black screen. To clarify, this is a "monitor

Same thing for me. Borders all pixely and crappy after resume from
suspend. CompizConfig disabling "Fading Windows" in Effects fixed it for
me. Thanks for the suggestion to disable effects. Screenshot of ugly

Okay, to give a little update on this, it is something in the "new"
version (2:4.4.5+dfsg-2ubuntu5.4 - I'll now refer to this as v5.4 for
simplicity's sake) - of what I don't exactly know. After about 12 more
full hours of searching and talking with another user who is having
similar issues I final

can backport the fix because of the compatibility problems mentioned.
This is also mentioned in the porting notes for KDE Frameworks 5.
