I was upgrading from 16.10 to 17.04 and got this error.
I did a boot repair and all is now well. I believe the problem was that
the efi partition was not mounted. I don't know why - I've not changed
anything since 16.10.

reattached the drive using /dev/disk/by-id and it worked without any
issues. I am using the 4.8 kernel now which has zfs 0.6.5.8. It looks
like the userland zfs tools are still at 0.6.5.7.

I have the same problem on XPS 15 9550, the problem occurred after
upgrading from 16.10 to 17.04.
Tried the Terminal way and xset, different mouses, wired and wireless
but nothing helped.
