I ran the command "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" and it fixed my issues.
(I did not need to run dist-upgrade separately.)
I suspect that a large number of UBUNTU users will have been affected by
this issue. Accordingly I think that this fix needs to be published as

I have also experienced the same fault apparently with kernel linux-
image-4.4.0-77. The problems I noted was no wired network connection,
no sound and what appears to be a default low resolution video mode. I
was able to get the system to work normally by choosing an earlier
kernel from grub
