This just occurred for me after using tasksel to switch from Ubuntu Mate
to Xubuntu. I simply deselected one, waited for the process to finish,
then reinstalled and re-ran tasksel. I did get an intitramfs related
error when reinstalling tassel, but I ignored it and continued to
install Xubuntu.

I installed the recent 4.11.3 kernel from the packages downloaded from

After rebooting unity did not start properly. I had no dash, no
decorations and no dock. After starting unity manually from the command
line I got window decorations for a program that
I'm getting this on an admittedly old Toshiba Tecra M9 which supposedly
_does_ have an infineon TPM chip. And although tpm_version shows a chip
of vendor id IFX to be present and there's a device, trousers or the
tpm-tools always claim the device is disabled (after log entries as per
OP).

In debugging bug #1694156, I found that ultimately my problem was
triggered by a hard-coded /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail I had set
once upon a time pointing to my libvirt dnsmasq server. It should not
be necessary to manually edit /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail to

Trying to understand why the dnsmasq is registered in /etc/resolv.conf
at all, I find that it's listed in /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/tail.
So 192.168.122.1 being listed as a global DNS server is a result of
local configuration, which means this problem is at least partly self-
inflicted.

Note also that there is an ubuntu-virt-server package still in the
archive which depends on libvirt-bin, despite being labelled
transitional, and this is referenced by the virt-host task. This all
needs to be sorted before the libvirt-bin binary package could be
dropped.

noticed that I had redundant files under /etc/dnsmasq.d from libvirt-
daemon-system and libvirt-bin. Looking at the status of the libvirt-bin
package, I see the following:
