I've seen this before, and fixed it by rolling in a patch someone proposed last
time it was seen (about 15.04/15.10?).
Now it's happening again on 17.10, so I suspect the fix, which had later rolled
into some python support package, has come unstuck in a more recent revision.

In case anyone is curious, I was able to get a workaround going at least
by using ffmpeg and a dummy video device to transform the video stream.
I am using a Razer Blade 2014 with the following webcam: Bus 003 Device
005: ID 0bda:579f Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

state. Underlying SAN got full before this.
The system is not in the failed state now. Is there any useful debug info
available in the logs?

The attached awk script converts Help2Man output (troff -man macros) to
mdoc. The results aren't perfect, but the script alleviates a lot of
the tedium in the conversion.
I would be willing to improve the script for the project's benefit if
the development team finds it
