It is even getting confusing! I did apt remove nut && apt autoremove and
killed all processes related to nut and removed /var/run/nut. After apt
install nut again, the directory was present. I do not know how to
explain this difference in behavior.

Update worked. Upgrade was working, then died with Illegal instruction.
Restarting the upgrade with -V shed no light on the problem. dpkg
--configure -a saw nothing to do. Apport tried to report but failed
because packages were out of date.

@tom-verdaat I'm temporarily removing this as dup, because I can't
reproduce your error on xenial, or maybe I don't understand the specific

Same issue happens when using qemu/kvm - however here I do actually see
the Try/Install dialogue appear fleetingly - I assume that if I wasn't
using SSD and booting directly from the iso rather than a usb - I would
fleetingly see the dialogue there.
