I ran the following tests on Ubuntu Desktop in legacy mode:
- boot to ubiquity-dm -> live session -> install
- boot to ubiquity-dm -> install
- from syslinux -> live session -> install
- from syslinux -> install
- I tried with and without orca activated in ubiquity-dm
- I did a series of boots to
Installed with more memory and that specific bug is no longer a problem.
However, I cannot boot into 18.04 at all. It is currently stalled out on
Installing open-vm-tools. After ~5 minutes it moved on to Starting
Message of the Day, but now it's just sitting there.

turns out I had'nt removed all the old xorg settings that were
necessary before. removing a few leftover lines in xorg.conf.d seems to
have fixed the problem

vmware easy install fails

Thanks for your bug report. Unfortunately, the log files show that your
install did not complete - it failed to install the bootloader; probably
due to being booted in EFI mode and installing to a disk that is missing
an ESP partition.
To solve the issue, reinstall from the final 18.04 image

Martin, I found this issue affects Nsight as well.
I've uploaded a fix which should be available soon.
Once it is, please do:
sudo update-alternatives --config java
and select option 0
As for the nvprof issue, please open a new bug and include steps to
reproduce.
