I've spoken to our toolchain maintainer ~doko. As far as I understood
(which is very little, to be honest) this linker option prevents one

After upgrade to Bionic my DNS is broken. `resolv.conf` contains

sky2 gigabit ethernet driver
Have the same problem.
Seems root cause is a broken dependcy:
eclipse-platform version is 3.8.1-11 it depends on eclipse-rcp version
3.8.1-11 which in turn depends on libequinox-osgi-java (>= 3.9.1).
But eclipse-platform-data expects libequinox-osgi-java version 3.8.1-11:
$ apt-cache --recurse
Once again fresh installed Bionic for test.
And now it works immediately after installing the brother driver.

So did I get it right ? It was just the
-Wl,-Bsymbolic-functions
linker option ?
Even if this is fixed for now, we should spend some time on finding out
why this linker option breaks the opencryptoki build. The man page says:
This should be the same if you use a bootable DVD instead of bootable
flash drive.

Calling 'apt-install grub-efi-amd64-signed' failed
May be I was too rude in my previous comment.
But this is actually as simple as selecting the right mode while booting up
your machine.
In ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 the selection window ware coming while installation.
In ubuntu 18.04 you need to select it manually while booting up.
The process is
the solution is to edit files in `/etc/default/grub.d/` instead of
editing the file `/etc/default/grub` .
Dunno why they changed it, there's no mention of it in the docs.
