Personally, I have not encountered that when using ubuntu or fedora and
simply swapping gdm3 for lightdm but it's good that the other bug report
has a fix. It looks like a hidpi bug; none of my monitors are hidpi.

OTH, the workaround from http://askubuntu.com/a/262364/175109 seems to
work, but I can't enable two-finger-scroll nor touch-to-click. in fact,
after running
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo modprobe -r psmouse
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo modprobe psmouse proto=imps
The touchpad works but id doesn't even appear

Yes, indeed, I think that may be it(new alsa config panel). They added boxes
and the way it works and it seems NOW that if I unplug headphones, and boot,
then go to settings/sound:
set system vol to full
set output device to "speakers-builtin audio"
set configuration to "analog stereo output"
tried to execute:
apport-collect -p xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1096046
but I get the following error:

I would suggest upgrading the version of Ubuntu. Because 14.04 has less
than 2 months left before it's end-of-life. And as time goes by it gets
fewer fixes and attention than the newer releases.
