One more info: after I managed to get into a terminal and do "sudo apt
purge rygel", one message appeared " ... out of memory ..." and showed
in 2 attributes about 30 GB ... I have 32 GB RAM ...

The long production job with the custom built kernel finished
successfully. I'm very confident this fixes our issue. Now running with
5.4.0-40.44 from focal-proposed as a test. I'll let it run for a few
hours. It usually hits the crash in an hour or so.

Note problems affect other puzzles as well and sgt-launcher seems to be
at fault. Apparently, its attempts to reparent the programs don't work
on xwayland. sgt-launcher was already killed, though, when the zombie
window wouldn't go away.

.config with "make oldconfig" and using defaults for all the new
options. And that kernel worked without the "nvidia_drm.modeset=1"
