haven't been able to repro once the proprietary drivers were

You seem to be using the old (not recommended) Xorg graphics drivers
called 'nouveau' and 'radeon'. They have been replaced by the newer
driver 'modesetting'. So if you are writing a Xorg config file be sure
to use the latter.

Sorry I was not clear enough.
When I said "Filled with" I meant that they were the files occupying space. I'm
sorry if that gave the idea that the corresponding vmlinuz-* files weren't
present - it was just that in terms of bytes occupied, the initrd files are the
big ones.
