Thanks a lot Steve, Everything was exactly as you wrote. The kernel was on menu.lst and instaling grub-pc and grub2 did help. It hangs during boot for some reason and I never got a chance to use it, but this problem is solved. Thank you! -- After upgraded to 10.04 from previous though usplash

Indeed only 2.6.31-11-generic is shown during boot, having hand edited the string to 2.6.32-16-generic started booting, but then hand with no- modules message. Does it have something to do with the GRUB > GRUB2 transition? How do I get the new kernel string in GRUB menu ??? Thank you ahaed --
