Ran into this problem on Ubuntu 9.10 w/ GeForce 9500 GT (DVI x2). Workaround:
1. Shutdown computer. 2. Unplug second monitor from DVI on graphics card. 3. Boot up ubuntu (X will work on the single display). 4. Install latest restricted NVIDIA driver. 5. Shutdown computer. 6. Plug in second monitor. 7. Boot up ubuntu. 8.
