So, following your lead, I looked at the xorg.conf. It is set up for my
external monitor. When I attached it to the monitor and rebooted,
everything was fine. This solves half the problem. I think I need a
stanza for the internal screen as well?

Thanks for the response.
I think there were a series of problems in this multi-day effort.
The iso images (I tried 14.4 and 15.4) I got from the Ubuntu d/l site were
corrupt - during the lenghty d/l process. I didn't check the file size or I
may have know that immediately - I have no clue how to

I tried burning iso image with both Ubuntu and WinX applications. Both
failed in different ways.
I suspect the usb stick is corrupt, but I don't know why the formatting
function doesn't fix that.
I may purchase another usb stick, but

triggered xfe to crash and it would be nice if it could have a more graceful
degradation.

I just started having the same problem. I am running 12.04 on two
machines, and they both have the same problem. Interestingly, this only
happened within the last few days. The printer had been discovered, and
working. It then acted as if it were disconnected. This appears to be a
fairly simple fix

My efforts to debug problem
I am running 12.10 on Dell inspiron 14-z, and I'm using the novatel
M760 over virgin mobile. I still have the problem that the system
doesn't see the device if I remove, and re-insert it. I have tried the
solution suggested in #27, and, now, the modem does autoconnect.
However, it has not solved
