My last install was the default (via live cd) with Hardy final and I
didn't have any problems with that particular build. I'll note though
that this has happened in the past - it'll look like it's fixed in a
late beta or final release, and then be broken again when the next
version comes around. I
Lots of bug reports with this same title and symptoms, so hopefully I'm
in the right place.
The error/bug report tool informs me that vbetool crashes whenever I
wake from suspend. Sometimes I'm not able to wake at all and need to do
a hard reset. That seems to be more frequent though when I
Well, I have some good news. :-) Hardy Heron Alpha 2 LiveCD installed
just fine this time. Recently the problem hasn't been during install
with the live cd, but with booting into the system after install. With
Alpha 2 everything seems to work great!
If possible though I'd like to hold off closing
Hedley: I could only wish. :-) Considering Canonical's investment in
this laptop and my time, I really assumed it would have been flagged as
critical 2+ years ago. Apparently in spite of the fact that everyone
knows what's wrong, no one has been able to fix it in that amount of
time.

I gave the install another go tonight (with alternate install CD) and
with the old installer trick with the modules I was able to get 7.10
installed. Not sure what my problem was the other night - probably a
typo or something on my end. The only thing I did differently tonight
was unload/reload
Still experiencing the bug with 7.10 Final. This time when I try the
workaround, I get a fatal error - module in use (or similar - I can't
find my USB drive right now to get you all the log files), when I try
and unload ata_piix. Just reloading ahci doesn't do anything either.

Leann, I just finished downloading 7.10 and I'll try to do an install
this weekend. I'm still running a little slow due to my medical
problems, but I promise I WILL do it ASAP! Luckily my aforementioned
homemade keyboard fix has worked on this laptop and after sitting idle
for nearly a year I've
I'm still having this issue with Gutsy Tribe 2 on the Portege. Same end-
user workaround seems to work - removing ata_piix and ahci and reloading
them in the proper order.
Is a permanent fix for this something that will break most other
systems? It seems as though we've know the problem and
Ok. Attempted the install tonight. It seemed to go fine, sans the broken
keyboard, and it even successfully resized the existing NTFS partition.
The problems now are showing up after the install. When I rebooted, the
Ubuntu logo just hung there with the progress bar at zero - even after

Wow, I looked at this and am so horribly confused, particularly as to

Hey Colin,
As this laptop is mine now, I've
I concur with Drew (although just with the live/install cd). I didn't
run into any problems at all. The only reason I'd worry about closing
the bug is because this has happened before - a few good builds, the a
few bad builds. If the cause of the bug is known and definitely fixed
though, by all
I apologize for the delay. That pesky real life has really been
messing with my Ubuntu fun-time lately. :-\
Unfortunately I can concur with Drew. The exact same thing happened to
me when I tried to install the latest Beta. Everything just stops at
update-grub. I haven't done a whole lot of
Rocco:
In my experience - yes. The bug still existed with Dapper final. With my
good luck with Edgy though I'm hoping it's been squashed finally. Yay!

Just a quick note - you guys might want some log files to confirm
I just installed Eft Knot 1 with the desktop CD and everything seemed to
install fine. There was no unloading/loading/reloading of modules to get
the hard disk recognized this time around. If you'd like some logs or
