I have the same issue with GeForce 9800M GTS/PCIe/SSE2 using NVIDIA
binary driver - version 331.38 from nvidia-331 (proprietary,tested)
An alternate way of getting rid of the black bars is to go to a console
(e.g. Ctrl + Alt +F1) and come back (i.e. Ctrl + Alt + F7)

Actually Favux's link (http://www.tuxgarage.com/2011/04/missing-top-and-
side-panels-in-unity.html) fixed my issue. Once I was back in CCSM and
re-enabled "Ubuntu Unity Plugin" and then disabled all the conflicts
Dash and the Notification bar re-appeared. I don't know why being in
CCSM originally
I have this issue as well.
I've removed CCSM,
I've purged both compiz and unity and re-installed the newest versions
and Unity still won't launch for me.
I guess I'm stuck in Unity 2D for the time being. Any help fixing this
issue would be appreciated.

Since Upgrading to 11.10 Beta1, seemingly every time I bring my laptop
out of Suspend I my screen corrupts. I can see a vertical swash of the
screen from the upper right down to lower right. The rest is washed
out. I can get rid of the issue if I log out and log in again.
