I believe I have the same problem with an Acer 5755G laptop (nVidia 540m) and
Ubuntu 11.10 64bit.
After a fresh install I get:
$ glxgears

I forgot to mention that I have two graphic cards in this system which
might be the cause of the problem:

I didn't change anything in VLC, it always attepts to use acceleration by
default, doesn't it?
Could you check this log file for me? I think it looks like VLC is using libva,
but it's still sooo slow. (of course without -vvv it's faster, but still too
slow)

The output of vainfo has nothing to do with the installation of libva1
from splitted desktop. Simply Ubuntu's stock libva1 package has a higher
version number than the one from splitted desktop. So you need to remove
it first before installing the other one.

I just upgraded to Oneiric and I have the same problem.
My /etc/timezone file must have been lost during the upgrade. I recreated it
with the proper contents (Europe/Budapest) and now the time is showing again.
Can we set this bug to New or Confirmed since this is still an issue?

I still don't have any way to set proxy settings in Oneiric updated just now.
The network settings is missing in the control center.
Also in the network manager applet I can't find any way to change proxy
settings.

The gconftool-2 commands don't work anymore. The launcher is always
hides automatically. Is there another solution for this?
I will set this bug as duplicate of bug #728054 because I think it fits
more to
Brad: the original report had 25 affected users and had all the upstream bugs
linked to it. Now that I opened a new bug for the same problem I'm the only one
that's affected. (This is a bug in launchapd, bug #343110)
My question is: was it really necessary to close the original bug? Is the new
bmhm: I was trying to prevent the previous bug from growing old, I was
updating it for each release, but no use. This is a bit upsetting, but I
opened a new bug anyway..

This is the reopening of bug #412527 for Natty.
There is a DVD eject button on these laptops, if they're pressed the drive is
ejected but the DVD won't be mounted after insertion. However the eject cdrom
command works.
Further info in the previously mentioned bug.
