Further testing has shown that Samba hangs on trying to resolve the
hosts file. Eliminating hosts from the resolve order allows smbclient to
do name resolution. In Konqueror using the Samba Shares link is still a
bust. However entering //hostname/servicename directly does work. Also
using Add a Net
Yes the suspend/hibernate functions work.
The last log statements are:
Will now halt
md: stopping all md devices.
Shutdown:hda
Power down.
Then nothing. I have to use power switch to turn off.

I have since moved that laptop to Debian Etch. The automatic power off
works fine with Etch.
