Hardy and Intrepid? Is it a different driver, or a free vs. proprietary
issue?

Same symptoms, same workaround, but I must also add that the same
machine ran Compiz quite nicely on Feisty and Hardy (enabled by
default), so I do not believe the hardware is incompatible with Compiz.
I suggest others here try booting from a Hardy desktop CD and see if it
runs with 'desktop effec

Per crimsun on IRC, I looked in ~/.xsession-errors (attached). Googled
it and found bug #277344, which suggested compiz may be a problem.
Removed compiz, and now I'm able to login fine.
Compiz worked fine for me in hardy.
Not sure if this bug is the same as #277344.

Created a new user with 'sudo adduser' in Failsafe Terminal, then tried
logging into GNOME as new user. This time, hangs at black screen. So,
must not be related to existing user data.
