Not the original reporter, but I can still (1.5 years later) reproduce
this in 14.04.3 LTS in GParted 0.18.0. Any way I can help?

I discussed this bug with the #radeon, #nouveau and #xorg IRC channels.
We discovered that I was able to boot when booting with the
nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter. (The radeon.modeset=0 kernel
parameter had no effect).
After the machine is booted, attempting to "modprobe -v nouveau
modeset=1"
