This issue was resolved after I had removed the whole directory
~/.config

It started to happen after I upgraded from Ubuntu 13.04 to 13.10. Gnome
freezes (but mouse cursor keeps moving) at least once a day and only Gnome
restarting helps.
When this happens the following error can be found in the /var/log/syslog:
